Veganism refers both to a diet that omits all animal products and, more broadly, a lifestyle that forgoes any products or services that inflict suffering on animals.

You’ve probably heard of Veganuary a month-long vegan challenge that started in 2014 and has helped to kick start the journey to going vegan for many people since.

There are lots of reasons you might consider going vegan, but here are five;

1. Your health could improve
Many people come to the vegan lifestyle for its health benefits. Although veganism may require supplements and careful planning, they’d argue that it’s a bit of a myth that we can’t get all our necessary nutrients (protein being the one most talked about) by eating outside of animal produce. Whole grains, vegetables and fruits are naturally low in fat and cholesterol and rich in fiber, magnesium, potassium and many vitamins.

Advocates of plant-based eating say vegans typically have lower levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, a lower body mass index, and reduced risk of death from heart disease and cancer.

2. It’s a greener choice
We are all more aware of the environment and our impact than ever before. Switching to a vegan lifestyle can be a small change that we can make personally that has big payoffs for the global community. Vast swathes of land are required to support and feed livestock, making it a significant contributor to deforestation. And the water used by animal agriculture, mostly as irrigation for feed crops, accounts for around 8% of global human water use. Enormous crops of corn or grain also require pesticides and fertilisers, leading to pollution of our waterways. Some vegans argue that if we grew plants merely for human consumption, rather than for supporting livestock, many of these problems would be solved.

On top of this, the farmed animals themselves generate waste and pollution (with cows belching out enormous amounts of methane every day) and animal agriculture is responsible for around 14 to 18% of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. That’s higher than transportation!

3. You’ll save money on your food shopping
A lot of vegan foods, like grains and pulses, cost little. They also last for a long time, so you can buy them in bulk. Fruits and vegetables are also easy to preserve: you can freeze them, dehydrate them, or pickle them. Even when they’re a bit past their best, they go great in pies and breads.

4. Be part of a community
One of the best parts of continuing your vegan journey is finding like-minded people who’ve been in your shoes. Finding vegan friends may seem scary at first, but there are lots of local vegan social groups and communities for you to get involved in. A quick search on Meet Up reveals lots of great sounding groups to check out Vegan groups | Meetup

5. Helping animals
There are many organisations from the Vegan Society to PETA who have lots of resources on the full facts about the links between the meat and dairy industries and cruelty to animals. By building a Vegan lifestyle for yourself and those closest to you, you’ll know you are doing your bit to help.
