It could even be you who loves coffee sweets. But for coffee lovers and connoisseurs, none are better than Whitakers Coffee Creams, the famous coffee cream chocolates loved across the UK and beyond.
They’re a delicious, luxurious blend of sumptuous coffee flavour, enveloped in fine vegan chocolate and delivered to you in a beautiful, 100% recyclable box.
But where do coffee cream chocolates come from, and are coffee flavoured chocolates as popular as they once were? Let’s take a closer look…
In the 17th and 18th centuries, English businessmen flocked to the wildly popular coffee houses to sip the beverage, which was thought to have medicinal properties.
Nobody really knows when the fondant at the heart of Whitakers coffee creams was first made, but it is generally thought it emerged in France in the mid-19th century, when bakers had access to lots of refined, granulated sugar.
The word fondant comes from the French ‘fondre’ or to melt, and describes the key characteristic of the tempting coffee creams.
Someone somewhere clearly had the bright idea of combining the two ingredients, covering them in chocolate and voila! The coffee cream was born.
There’s so much more to these coffee cream sweet treats than the ingredients list, but let’s go through the composition of these delicious coffee creams.
The creamy, rich fondant in these smooth coffee cream chocolates is a mix of sugar, glucose syrup and water, while the vegan dark chocolate coating contains cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter and soya lecithin as an emulsifier.
There’s the all-important coffee flavour, while plain caramel provides the colour. Although Whitakers coffee cream chocolates are gluten and palm oil free, they do contain soya, as well as traces of lactose and nuts.
Of course it’s a vegan product so you can indulge yourselves without a hint of guilt, while the chocolate is made with FairTrade cocoa.
